Okay, now that presentations are done, Ellie and I are back to work. Unfortunately, she spend most of class with Ms. Marberry so I was flying solo today. I did research into my part of the project- the illustration. An important part of illustrating a children's book is creating a cohesive art style. I've started sketching out character designs at home, so today I did some basic coloring in Photoshop. I'm trying to come up with a color palette that I enjoy. I also did some research into illustrating with Photoshop, and I found some cool guides that I think will help me out a lot.

9/1- This Machine Kills Fascists

I began preliminary research on my thesis topic- analyzing the relationship between music and politics decade by decade from the 1940s to the present day. I began by searching music websites such as Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, and NPR to find articles and editorials that might be of interest to me, as well as to find writers who I could possibly reach out to and contact for mentorship. I found several articles about modern protest music that I can use to discuss current day music and politics. I then started drafting a timeline beginning with the impact of Woody Guthrie and the emergence of protest music in the 1950s. I focused on the history of the song, "This Land is Your Land," and its significance as one of the earliest, most well known protest songs. Now that our book is in the final stages, Ellie and I have been working on getting judges, working on the paper, and the final presentation. There's not much to say about today, as I spent the whole period outlining the paper. I want to discuss our development process, the challenges we faced when coming up with ideas and illustrating, and the message/impact we want our book to have on the kids reading it. These are also the ideas I hope to hit in the presentation.
